GSK claims positive asthma study data

03 Dec 2008

Clinical Research

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Theravance have reported positive results from a clinical study of a potential asthma treatment.

The companies said patients with moderate to severe forms of the condition treated with GW642444 showed dose-dependent improvements in lung function.

Findings came from a phase-two trial involving a total of 607 patients.

Commenting on the data, senior vice-president of GSK's respiratory medicines development centre Darrell Baker said: "We are encouraged by the 24-hour duration of action and sustained response over 28 days."

He added that the option of a once-daily treatment is "an important new development" given that 50 per cent of patients are "not well controlled".

Meanwhile GSK recently signed a cooperation agreement with Shenzhen Neptunus Interlong Bio-Technique.

The move represents an initial step towards the establishment of a joint venture for co-developing influenza vaccines, which will firstly target strains of the virus specific to China, Hong Kong and Macau.
