Alcon eye drop gets EMEA approval

03 Dec 2008

Regulatory Affairs

Alcon has said the European Medicines Agency has approved its Azarga ophthalmic suspension eye drop product.

The medicine has been granted approval in the European Union for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure associated with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension in adult patients for whom monotherapy has proved insufficient.

Alcon had submitted data from two clinical studies which it stated had shown that Azarga was more comfortable and better tolerated than the product Cosopt.

"This new product is a direct result of our commitment to offering more treatment options to patients affected by glaucoma," commented Sabri Markabi, the firm's senior vice-president of research and development and chief medical officer.

Alcon recently reported its financial results for the third quarter of the year.

The company posted global sales of just over $1.5 billion (£1.03 billion), which represented a 14.1 per cent increase on the same period in 2007.
