GSK trials heart attack drug

18 Dec 2008

Clinical Research

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) will proceed with phase-three clinical trials of a cardiovascular medication.

The pharmaceuticals giant will evaluate the efficacy of long-term treatment with the inhibitor darapladib in patients with chronic coronary heart disease.

Its double-blind study, named Stability, will involve over 15,000 men and women from 29 countries.

"Despite major advances in medical treatment, coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide and new approaches are needed to help reduce this burden to patients and society," said Patrick Vallance, senior vice president in drug discovery at GSK.

The trials aim to discover if the drug can reduce the risk of cardiovascular illnesses, including non-fatal heat attacks and strokes when administered alongside other medications.

GSK this week announced that it will form a partnership with Dynavax Technologies Corporation to produce and market novel inhibitors used to treat immuno-inflammatory diseases.

Dynavax will conduct up to four research and development programmes for the drugs.
