Curaxin candidate 'reduces prostate cancer progression'

30 Dec 2008

Clinical Research

A new drug could help to reduce the progression of prostate cancer, according to clinical research.

Cleveland BioLabs's (CBLI) CBLC102 was found to decrease or stabilise prostate-specific antigen velocity in half of patients in its phase-two clinical trials which are part of the Curaxin programme.

The candidate initiates powerful activation of the tumour-suppressing protein, p53, and was found to be well-tolerated, with no serious side effects.

"We are satisfied with the outcome of this trial, which demonstrated indications of activity and a remarkable safety profile in one of the most difficult groups of cancer patients," said Michael Kurman, clinical oncologist and chief medical officer at CBLI.

Scientists have also made another breakthrough in the Curaxin programme, learning more about the mechanism of action of these candidates, which they say has helped them to discover extra advantages of the drugs.

Earlier this month, CBLI president Michael Fonstein gave a presentation to the Rodman and Renshaw Annual Healthcare Conference, in which he discussed the firm's development of Curaxins.
