UK scientist wins cancer research award

    30 Dec 2008

A British-based scientist has won the inaugural American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Outstanding Investigator Award.

Professor Douglas Easton, director of the Cancer Research UK Genetic Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, was selected for his pioneering research into breast cancer.

"I am extremely honoured to receive this prestigious award," said Professor Easton, adding that he has been "fortunate" to be a part of "major advances in breast cancer genetics" in recent years.

He praised the investigators he has worked with in breast cancer research, saying the award recognises their efforts as much as his.

During the 1990s, Professor Easton identified two genes that are a major risk in the development of breast cancer, accounting for around five per cent of cases.

This week, Cleveland BioLabs reported that its Curaxin candidate CBLC137 - co-developed with ChemBridge Corporation - has shown reliable anti-tumour effects in animal models of breast cancer.
