Young blood 'could increase cancer survival'
30 Dec 2008

'Young blood' could increase cancer survival rates, scientists at Tel Aviv University have found.
The researchers - led by Professor Shamgar Ben-Eliyahu - discovered that blood which had been stored for less than three days increased the chances of survival for animals carrying two types of cancer.
"I don't think this study will or should change the practices of surgeons in hospitals, but it is definitely something that needs to be investigated further in human clinical studies," said Professor Ben-Eliyahu.
The research shows the length of storage time for blood could affect the survival rates of patients with colon or prostate cancers, he added.
Anecdotal evidence suggests some surgeons prefer to use young blood during procedures, Professor Ben-Eliyahu continued.
GlaxoSmithKline recently decided to hand back the rights to two drug candidates used in the treatment of cancer to Cytokinetics, citing a "shift in portfolio direction".
It said the collaboration between the two firms will continue despite the decision.
