Genzyme to acquire Bayer's MS drug and oncology portfolio

    03 Apr 2009

Genzyme has signed a deal to acquire the rights to Bayer Healthcare's potential breakthrough treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) and its haematologic oncology portfolio.

The worldwide license for Campath will transfer to the Massachusetts-based firm, along with Fludara and Leukine.

Genzyme will also acquire a new manufacturing facility for between $75 (£51.3 million) and $100 million and hire the plant's operating workforce, subject to approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

It also intends to integrate members of Bayer's commercial team into its global operations as part of its promotional efforts for Campath, Fludara and Leukine.

"Through the acquisition of these hematologic oncology assets, we enhance our commercial presence in the oncology market with a comprehensive product portfolio," says Mark Enyedy, president of Genzyme Oncology and MS.

Recently, Shire acquired the worldwide rights, excluding the USA, Canada and Barbados, to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug Equasym from UCB for 55 million euros (£50 million).
