New Takeda drug could kill cancer cells

09 Apr 2009

Clinical Research

A new drug developed by Takeda's Millenium researchers has been found to kill cancer cells in early trials.

The company has discovered a small molecule inhibitor, MLN4924, and has so far tested it in preclinical studies on animals, finding it to reduce the NEDD8-Activating Enzyme (NAE).

Scientists say it has the potential to treat various types of cancer based on these initial findings, which have been published in the journal Nature.

It is the first small molecule inhibitor to target NAE and has been found to kill cancer cells in vitro and in human tumour xenograpfts in mice.

"The work described in the Nature article highlights Millennium's leadership in protein homeostasis research and drug discovery. It is very gratifying to see this science support the transition of MLN4924 into clinical development," says Joseph Bolen, chief scientific officer, at the US firm.

Last month, Takeda signed a deal with Wyeth to regain the rights to prostate cancer drug, Prostap.
