New arthritis drug 'calms symptoms'

11 Jun 2009

Clinical Research

A new monthly arthritis treatment can stop the symptoms of the disease, according to one drug company.

Johnson and Johnson claimed its Simponi therapy provided "persistent improvements" in symptoms of patients with psoriatic arthritis at the European League Against Rheumatism annual congress.

Iain McInnes, the lead investigator and professor of experimental medicine at the University of Glasgow, said: "These findings demonstrate the promise and utility of Simponi in treating both the joint and skin manifestations of this disease."

He added that the research showed significant improvements could be made to the symptoms of arthritis and that Simponi was very effective.

More than 400 patients took part in the study, which combined placebo groups with those taking the Johnson and Johnson drug.

At least half of sufferers who took Simponi reported that their symptoms had subsided and the improvements increased to 70 percent in groups which took higher doses of the drug.

In other arthritis news, Roche has recently claimed its MabThera drug significantly reduces joint damage and can halt progression of the disease in some cases.
