Genzyme bounces back after factory mishap

26 Jun 2009

Clinical Research

Genzyme has taken the first steps to get its Allston plant back to full working capacity after a virus caused havoc and stopped production.

The drug company has worked with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin shipping some drugs after testing revealed they were not affected by the infection.

Manufacturing of the Gaucher disease treatment Cerezyme has been hit hardest by the virus, which was found in one of the plant's bioreactors earlier in the month.

Henri Termeer, Genzyme's chairman and chief executive officer, said: "We are confident that the Allston plant will be back online later next month, that we will be able to minimise the impact of constrained supply, and that the measures we are implementing will prevent this issue from occurring again."

Mr Termeer described the way that industry bodies, patients, suppliers and other pharmaceutical companies have supported Genzyme as being "heartening".

The closure is the second time safety fears have been raised about Genzyme's Allston plant, after they were questioned earlier in the year when the FDA issued a letter laying out problems which it found at the facility.
