Diabetes drug collaboration given all clear

26 Jun 2009

Clinical Research

Two of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies have received the all clear for a new diabetes drug which they say could be used alongside other therapies.

AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb joined forces to work on the Onglyza treatment, which was given a positive review by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP).

The treatment was specifically approved as an add-on therapy for patients also using drugs such as metformin, thiazolidinedione or sulphonylurea.

Approval was given after the companies presented research from six separate phase three studies which assessed the drug as a once-daily therapy.

Onglyza will now be sent to the European Commission for approval and AstraZeneca expects a decision to be reached in a few months.

AstraZeneca recently received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its latest childhood schizophrenia treatment.
