Johnson and Johnson wins patent case

30 Jun 2009

Medical Affairs

Johnson and Johnson has won a lawsuit worth $1.67 billion (£1 million) against its rival Abbott Laboratories after the company infringed a patent.

Centocor, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, brought the case against Abbott after it broke a patent when it reproduced an arthritis treatment.

Kim Taylor, president of centocor ortho biotech, said: "We are particularly gratified that the jury recognised our valuable intellectual property, finding our patent both valid and infringed."

The president added that the company will continue to assert intellectual property rights for its immunology therapies because the company says it offers new treatments for patients with inflammatory diseases.

Johnson and Johnson recently received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use for its rheumatoid arthritis treatment Simponi.
