Genentech doctor receives research award

02 Jul 2009

Medical Affairs

One of Genentech’s most respected former doctors has won the Dr Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research for his work on a series of cancer treatments.

Dr Axel Ullrich will collect his $100,000 (£61,000) prize money at a ceremony in Belgium later in the year.

The doctor's work on the Genentech cancer drug Herceptin was a major factor in him winning the annual award.

Solomon Snyder, chairman of the Dr Paul Janssen award selection committee, said: "Dr Ullrich was chosen for his pioneering work in applying molecular biology and molecular cloning to the discovery of protein therapeutics for the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including diabetes and cancer."

He added that the doctor is one of the few medical figures who has achieved success in academic fields and also brought successful treatments to thousands of patients suffering from chronic diseases.

The European Mediscience Awards Dinner 2009 took place in London last week and celebrated pharmaceutical excellence over the past year.
