Alcon starts pink eye test

07 Jul 2009

Clinical Research

The pharmaceutical company Alcon has started a phase two trial into its latest treatment for viral conjunctivitis, which is a form of pink eye.

Aganocide was developed by Alcon's partner NovaBay in an attempt to treat a condition, which it said leads to more than four million visits to doctors in the US each year.

Dr Sabri Markabi, Alcon's chief medical officer and senior vice president of research and development, said: "This study is an important step forward with the clinical program for this potentially dual-acting therapy to address the multiple causes of conjunctivitis."

Ron Najafi, chairman and chief executive officer of NovaBay, added that the trial is the first step in a programme which is intended to develop the first effective product to combat viral conjunctivitis.

NovaBay has a licensing and research collaboration agreement with Alcon for use of the treatment which mimics the body’s defence against infection.

Alcon recently discontinued development of its anecortave acetate treatment, which is designed to reduce intraocular pressure which is associated with glaucoma.
