Takeda seeks approval for hypertension combination therapy

30 Mar 2009

Regulatory Affairs

Takeda has applied to Japanese authorities for approval of Blopress combined with amlodipine besylate as a treatment for hypertension.

Blopress was first launched in 1999 and has since gained an additional indication for chronic heart failure in 2005, the first angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) to do so.

The Japanese Society of Hypertension recently issued guidelines recommending the combination of ARB and calcium channel blocker (CCB) for patients who have not responded to one therapy on its own.

Blopress and amlodipine besylate, a CCB, could offer a new treatment option for patients who are taking both medicines or either one of the two, according to Takeda.

It states: "This combination product is expected to improve the ratio of patients with hypertension attaining the target blood pressure level."

Earlier this month, Takeda launched Ecard, a combination tablet containing Blopress and a low-dose diuretic for the treatment of hypertension.

Yasuhiko Yamanaka, general manager of the firm's pharmaceutical marketing division, said the company will provide information about the drug for medical professionals.
